Last Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal Paygrade column profiled the career of blogging. Here’s what they said about the pay and hours:

THE PAY: Most self-employed bloggers take in between $2,000 and $10,000 a month from ad sales, says Henry Copeland, founder of, a Web advertising concern based in Carrboro, N.C. The few that have huge audiences make significantly more, he adds. During election time, for example, a political blogger can bring in $20,000 to $30,000 a month, says Ken Layne, West Coast bureau chief for, a political gossip blog owned by Gawker Media. Some bloggers are employed by companies, but they are often part of the marketing department, and blogging is usually only a small part of their duties.

THE HOURS: Self-employed bloggers set their own schedules. Writers of breaking-news blogs say 40- to 60-hour workweeks are the norm. To scoop his competitors, Mario Lavandeira…

Jerry Bruckheimer Talks Lone Ranger Cuts, Pirates 5

The Hollywood Reporter got a chance to talk to producer Jerry Bruckheimer about the cuts that had to be made in order to get the green light from Disney for The Lone Ranger, starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.

He talked about the changes they made to the production plan but also gave more details on the cuts:

“We cut a sequence involving a coyote attack — supernatural coyotes — and a small animated segment. The train [scenes] are intact. We trimmed it a little bit. Gore made some sacrifices creatively, but nothing that would hurt the film. We had to work it out. The studio set a number, and it was always our responsibility to get to the number.”

Bruckheimer addressed the change in release date from December 2012 to May 31, 2013 as well:

“It’s a better date. Before, we were up against The Hobbit and World War Z. Now we’re a week after Fast and Furious and a couple weeks before Superman. The competition is not as bad. There are a lot of movies jammed in at Christmas. In the summer, you have a longer run. You’re cut off after the first of the year on a Christmas release.”

He was also asked about the fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, which will happen considering “On Stranger Tides” earned $1.039 billion at the worldwide box office this year.

“We’re in the outline phase. We will lay out a story. We have a script, but we decided we could do better.”

More Details on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Filming and Sets

Columbia Pictures had already revealed that all of the filming for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is taking place in New York City, but now The Wall Street Journal has taken it one step further and gone into detail about where exactly they are filming and some of the sets they are working on. Here are some excerpts from the article:

The production sprawls over about 300,000 square feet at four facilities in Long Island and Brooklyn.

The movie began shooting Feb. 1 and will take 151 days to shoot, but just a few dozen will take place on locations in the city and upstate. They will spend one day filming in the real Times Square, but 50 to 65 days shooting on Long Island.

The film is being shot at Marcy Armory in Brooklyn, as well as at Long Island’s Gold Coast Studios and Grumman Studios, both in Bethpage.

The set hints at life beyond high school, including a Columbia University dormitory room that appears to be outfitted for female freshman, with sparkly sneakers and film-noir posters.

To recreate the effect of Times Square’s flashing lights, the producers brought in 16 cranes with lights and green screens. But at least one of the film’s 40 sets thrusts back to an earlier time. The subway station the crew constructed in about six weeks features skylights and Art Deco columns that most closely resembled a station under City Hall that closed in 1945.

Spiderman will go to Rochester to film a chase scene because speed laws upstate aren’t as restrictive as New York City’s.

Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley, Dane DeHaan, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, Sally Field and Chris Cooper.

In the May 2, 2014 release, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

Sylvester Stallone Gives an Update on The Expendables 3

Sylvester Stallone took to Twitter today to give an update on the status of The Expendables 3.

He said that he’s writing the third installment right now and that you can expect“mountains of surprises.” He added that he thinks “EX3 needs NEW blood and more humor…. The films were always meant to be more on the humorous side with moments of drama.

Jackie Chan was quoted last December as saying that Stallone had asked him to be in the third film and he “agreed on the condition that I will be appearing as more than just a minor role with a few scenes.”

Stallone, in his latest tweets, confirmed that he’s talking to Chan, but that Steven Seagal won’t be part of the film. “No S. Seagal, sorry, but maybe we get lucky with J. Chan!”

Then he again mentioned that he is looking to cast “some young bloods!!! By young I mean 22 to 27. Not big bruisers but tech wizard, super brains and a young woman who is not a sex symbol but funny, tough, REAL.”

Who do you think the “young bloods” should be? The first film earned $274.5 million worldwide in 2010 and the second brought in $300 million worldwide last year.
